About this tool

Universal File Converter reads real office and document formats and rewrites them as something else — all locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and there are no accounts or watermarks.

Documents

Read PDF, DOCX, ODT, EPUB, RTF, Markdown, HTML and plain text. Write PDF, DOCX, HTML, Markdown or TXT. DOCX, ODT and EPUB are opened as the ZIP packages they really are, so paragraphs and headings are read from the source XML rather than guessed at.

Be clear about PDF ↔ Word. Turning a PDF into Word gives you a text document. Your browser has no layout engine that can rebuild a PDF's exact columns, fonts and images, so the converter extracts the text in reading order and builds a valid .docx from it. Prose, reports and essays come through well; a magazine spread or a scanned page will not look identical. Going the other way, Word → PDF is re-typeset cleanly, but custom fonts, tables and embedded images are not carried over.

Spreadsheets

Read XLSX and CSV, then write CSV, JSON or a standalone HTML table. Every worksheet is available, and formulas are read as their cached values.

Data & archives

Convert CSV ↔ JSON, JSON ↔ XML, encode files to Base64, and bundle or unpack ZIP archives — with path-traversal protection on extraction.

Honest limitations

Scanned PDFs have no text layer and need OCR — the tool says so rather than returning an empty file. Legacy .doc, .xls and .ods are not supported. Audio, video and image conversion live in the Universal Image Converter instead.

FAQ

Can it really convert PDF to Word?
Yes — with an important caveat. The output is a text document: the converter pulls the text out in reading order and builds a valid .docx from it. Your browser cannot rebuild a PDF's exact columns, fonts and images, so simple prose and reports survive well while complex layouts will not look identical.
How accurate is Word to PDF?
DOCX, ODT and EPUB are parsed down to their paragraphs and headings, then re-typeset into a clean, text-first PDF with proper page breaks. Headings, lists and paragraphs survive; bespoke fonts, tables, colours and embedded images do not.
Why won't my scanned PDF convert?
A scan is a photograph of a page with no text layer. Reading one needs OCR, which this tool does not do — so instead of handing you an empty file it tells you plainly that no text was found. Run OCR first, then convert.
Which spreadsheet formats work?
XLSX reads every worksheet, including shared strings and cached formula values, and writes CSV, JSON or an HTML table. CSV is read too. Legacy .xls, .ods and macro-enabled workbooks are not supported.
Is my document uploaded anywhere?
Never. Everything runs in JavaScript on your device using PDF.js, pdf-lib and a bundled copy of JSZip. There is no network request, and the tool keeps working offline once loaded.
